Drivers face months of congestion in Leixlip, with contractors warning traffic will be heavy and advising motorists to avoid the village.
The L1015 is closed around the clock, between the L1014 and L5051 junctions, and the closure is due to remain in place until mid-June.
Traffic is being diverted along the L1014, R148 and R149, pushing large volumes of traffic through Leixlip village.

Residents say congestion has worsened and have raised concerns about safety and access for emergency vehicles.
The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and motorists are being advised to avoid the village if possible, as delays are expected to continue.
A spokepserson for Coffey Construction said: "I suppose we want people to be aware that Leixlip will very busy due to the diversion route going through the village so if they can avoid the village if possible for them."
