The projects are included in 33 local authority-led climate action announcements
Funding has been made available to areas across Kildare for various climate action projects.
In Athy, €4,961,051 has been allocated to RegenTEC Circular Economy Hub, bringing a former school building back into use as a centre for education, training and sustainable construction.
€640,221 has been allocated for decarbonisation and energy efficiency works at Athy Leisure Centre.
It will allow for the decarbonisation of the facility through the replacement of approximately 90% of gas-based heating with air-to-water heat pumps, alongside upgrades to the building management system, pool heat exchangers, pool pumps, air handling units, metering and control systems, and the installation of a rooftop solar PV system with battery storage.
Funding in Athy also includes €408,394 for the replacement of an existing gas-fired heating system with a closed-loop geothermal heating system at the Library.
Meanwhile, €299,600 in funding has been announced for a conservation masterplan for the Carton Avenue amenity lands in Maynooth, developing an existing park and integrating biodiversity measures.
The projects are among 33 local authority-led climate action projects announced by the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD, under the EU Just Transition Fund.
The Minister increased the overall fund from €30 million to €36 million because of the quality of projects submitted.
The START scheme is co-funded by the Government and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund.
Funded projects must help deliver local authority Climate Action Plans.
The Clane-Maynooth and Athy Municipal Districts form part of Ireland's EU Just Transition Territory, alongside counties Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath and Roscommon and parts of Galway and Tipperary.
