The shop, initially opened by Ger's father, Hugh, in the 1950s, has been a cherished establishment for locals and visitors.
Yesterday marked the end of a beloved Kilcullen institution as Ger Peacocke closed the doors of Peacocke's shoe-making and repair shop for the last time, bringing a close to nearly 70 years of service on Main Street.
The shop, initially opened by Ger's father, Hugh, in the 1950s, has been a cherished establishment for locals and visitors.
Over the years, the workshop became a haven for custom shoe-making and repair, offering everything from hunting boots to racing boots.
Ger's dad specialised in creating bespoke footwear, a craft he passed down to his son, who joined the family business 48 years ago.
With his unique skill set, Ger continued to welcome a diverse clientele, including several famous faces.
"We had customers like Charlie Haughey, John Hurt, and even Richard Kiel, who played Jaws in the James Bond movies," Ger said on Kildare Today.
For locals, Peacocke’s was far more than a shoe shop; it was a place of connection.

Kilcullen Diary
Known for his friendly demeanor, Ger made a point of ensuring that customers left his shop in better spirits than when they arrived.
He shared a laugh and a story with everyone, particularly elderly patrons who cherished the social visit as much as the service.
Despite the changing times and the rise of multinational stores, Peacocke’s remained popular, largely because of its specialisation.
After nearly five decades in the shop, Ger is looking forward to spending time with his family and maybe enjoying a round of golf.
