Plans to bring empty and rundown buildings on Leixlip’s Main Street back into use have faced a setback - but Kildare County Council says some progress is now being made.
The council began a Compulsory Purchase process in June last year to take control of several vacant properties.
However, that plan was overturned in April when An Coimisiún Pleanála ruled that the sites already had a live planning application, which runs until November 16th 2025.
That decision means the council can’t move ahead with the CPO for now.
Despite this, the council’s Town Regeneration Team says some work has started on certain buildings, and a number of property owners are now in contact with officials about future plans.
They’ve carried out some improvements to appearances on Main Street and are discussing longer-term redevelopment and reoccupation of the sites.
Responding to Social Democrats Cllr Nuala Killeen, a council spokesperson said: "The Town Regeneration Team is aware that works have commenced on some of the properties and will continue to monitor the situation."
They added: "The Town Regeneration Team met with the owners of several other properties on the Main Street. Works to improve the appearance took place after this meeting. The owners are continuing to engage and update the team with plans for development and reoccupation of the properties."
