Horse have caused considerable damage to trees on Augaboura lane in Athy.
They had originally been planted as a sound barrier to the new distributor road in Athy.
But the lock leading to the trees has been broke numerous times, and horses have caused damage to them, resulting in them needing replacement.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Labour Councillor for Athy Mark Leigh explained the extent of the damage caused:
"Unfortunately somebody who would know the bye-laws with horses in Athy broke the lock last year and let their horses in. They caused considerable damage to all of the trees that were planted, 10s of thousands of euros worth of damage."
Cllr Leigh added that the issue had been rectified but that "they've since broke the lock again and replaced it with their own lock" and also said that illegal encampments had gained access to Augaboura lane.
"The community up there are all lovely people, they're just very upset over this and what they had agreed with the council is now completely destroyed. We just need to strengthen the policies around this at a national level."
In response, Kildare County Council have said that there are no financial resources available within the Parks Section budget
to undertake any replanting.
