A prominent Irish Islamic cleric says Ireland and other Western governments should use their levers of power over the Taliban around aid, trade and diplomatic recognition to ensure there is no return to the “dark days of the 90s”.
Dr Umar Al-Qadri said there were “mixed and conflicting reports” from different parts of Afghanistan regarding the reality of “new Taliban” that the extremist outfit is now eager to portray to the outside world.
While the Irish Government is being called upon calls to take-in up to 2,000 Afghan refugees, ten the number to which it has committed.
The Movement for Asylum Seekers in Ireland says there needs to be a lot more accepted than the 195 pledged already.
The Refugee Council & Amnesty International Ireland, earlier this week said 1,000 Afghans should be brought to Ireland.
Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri is Chair of the Irish People & Integration Council - and is making similar calls.
