The 700m stretch of road saw as many prosecutions as the entire counties of Kilkenny, Louth, and Mayo.
Over €108,000 in fines was collected from motorists caught speeding on a stretch of road at Clogheen in Monasterevin in 2022.
The 700m stretch of the R445 road saw as many prosecutions as the entire counties of Kilkenny, Louth, and Mayo.
District Court Judge Andrew Cody, according to the Irish Times, criticised the enforcement practices, describing it as “deliberately targeting an unjust speed zone” with “rich pickings” and likening it to “shooting fish in a barrel.”
His comments came as he struck out 32 speeding cases related to the area at Portlaoise District Court.
In a written decision, Judge Cody said he has been “very concerned” for two years about what he called “excessive” prosecutions by GoSafe vans for breaching the 60km/h limit on this short section of road, which, while in Kildare, falls under the Portlaoise District Court's jurisdiction.
