KCC Give Conservation Update On Clane Mausoleum

The structure is protected and under the care of the council.

Kildare County Council has given an update on progress for the Wogan Browne Mausoleum in Clane.

The building has suffered water ingress in recent times and is a protected structure under the care of KCC.

This mausoleum was built by Stephen Browne in 1743 who erected it just a couple of feet outside the graveyard at Mainham.

Browne wanted to build it in or adjoining the church nearby but quarreled with the Protestant Rector of Clane, the Rev. John Daniel who wanted to charge Browne 5 Guineas for the privilege of doing so.

Browne refused to pay the money and built the mausoleum on his own land just several feet outside the graveyard wall.

KCC say Blackwood Associates Architects were appointed to provide conservation architectural services and project management for the works, following a competitive tender process in April 2026.

The planned conservation programme has been developed, which will include repairs to the slate roof and lead flashing, installation of appropriate rainwater goods and construction of a drainage system to improve site drainage and protect the structure from moisture-related deterioration.

Certain elements of the works require the appropriate consents and licences, including archaeological oversight and agreement from the National
Monuments Service.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Independent Councillor for Clane-Maynooth MD Pádraig McEvoy desrcibed it as an "extraordinary piece of heritage".

"It's an extraordinary piece of heritage in our area, it dates from the 1700s when a family moved to what's now Clongowes."

Cllr McEvoy also welcomed the update from KCC, also commending local people who have aided the council in the works.
