Construction on a community centre begins today at its former site, the Bawnogues
Kilcock playground is to be relocated, not closed.
Kildare County Council announced earlier this week that construction of a €2 million community centre in Bawnogues is to begin on today, and take around 10 months.
That site currently houses the town's playground.
The matter was covered on Wednesday's edition of Kildare Today and raised in the Dáil on Thursday by Sinn Féin Kildare North TD, Réada Cronin.
It has been confirmed that the play area will not close, but will be immediately relocated.
Deputy Cronin, and local parent, Sabrina O'Reilly, joined Eoin Beatty on Tuesday's edition of Kildare Today:
"Kildare County Council are committed to the delivery of a Community Centre on the Bawnogues site for the benefit of the Kilcock community as it recognises the shortfall in existing services of this nature in Kilcock. To this end Kildare County Council have appointed a Contractor to undertake the construction of the new community centre, unfortunately in order to construct the community centre, the existing playground has to close from the 8th of June.
We recognise that this will cause considerable disruption during the construction of the centre and particularly losing the playground. In order to limit the impact Kildare County Council will dismantle the existing playground and are proposing to reinstate the playground in front of the Primary Care Centre building. This is a temporary solution and may take a few weeks to organise depending on contractor availability. Kildare County Council will confirm the exact details in relation to timelines and will update Councillors and the public as soon as possible.
With regards to the new playground proposed for the site, which has Part 8 planning permission, the Strategic Projects and Public Realm Team will procure a Landscape Architect for the design and preparation of a tender package for the playground installation. It is proposed that a Contractor will be appointed later this year and can commence work on the installation, prior to the completion of the Community Centre.
The Community Centre and new playground once complete will be a huge asset to the people of Kilcock. "
