A member of My Lovely Horse Rescue described the donkey, named Peadar, as "cruel".
An abandoned donkey with severely overgrown hooves has been taken into the care of Moyvalley-based animal charity, My Lovely Horse rescue.
The donkey was found roaming alone in a forest by the Donkey Sanctuary Ireland.
He will undergo treatment at UCD before being rehomed in Kildare.
A member of My Lovely Horse Rescue described the treatment of the donkey, named Peadar, as "cruel".
"His hooves are the worst we’ve seen in a long time - the discomfort and pain this boy had learnt to deal with is unreal," they said.
