In a statement to Kfm, the council added that all parking appeals are managed by its contractor, APCOA, and that no one is exempt from this process.

Kildare County Council has confirmed that no exemptions apply to councillors or staff when it comes to parking bye-laws across the county.

The local authority says all drivers - including elected members - must comply with parking regulations and pay for parking where required.

In a statement to Kfm, the council added that all parking appeals are managed by its contractor, APCOA, and that no one is exempt from this process.

Elected members are also not entitled to claim expenses for parking fines.

"Parking is regulated in a number of towns in Kildare by means of parking bye-laws which are approved as a reserved function by the elected members of Kildare County Council.  There are no exemptions for staff or elected members in complying with parking bye-laws, including paying for parking where appropriate," a council spokesperson said.

Last week, Independent Councillor Seamie Moore, the Mayor of Naas, had a parking fine dismissed at Naas District Court.

The case stemmed from an incident earlier this year when Councillor Moore overstayed the grace period while attending an official event at Naas Town Hall.

Cllr Moore originally paid his parking fee.

He said he refused to pay the fine because it was "unfair" and that he "might look for some grace periods or some exemption for the Mayor or the Deputy Mayor at very important functions".

The court has since dismissed the case, and Councillor Moore said he felt “justified,” reiterating that councillors should be given some leeway when attending official functions.
