The proposed memorial would commemorate fallen Defence Forces personnel, recognise the Curragh’s military heritage, and involve consultation with veterans’ groups on its design and location.
Kildare County Council officials have said they support a motion from Social Democrats Councillors Pat Balfe and Chris Pender to create a permanent memorial at Áras Chill Dara honouring the county’s long association with the Defence Forces.
The proposed memorial would commemorate fallen Defence Forces personnel, recognise the Curragh’s military heritage, and involve consultation with veterans’ groups on its design and location.
The Council expressed support for the initiative and confirmed that a Conservation Architect will be engaged to explore incorporating the memorial into planned restoration works at the Clock Arch/Lantern Building.
Council officials said the cost of any memorial feature and the funding of any significant memorial work outside of the normal capital expenditure on refurbishing the Clock Tower will also have to be considered.
They also said the Civic Memorial Technical Committee will need to be consulted as part of the process to "ensure compliance with the council's Civic Memorial Policy".
A six-foot Defence Forces memorial featuring a 25-pounder gun was previously unveiled at the site in 2018.
