Kildare County Council Delivers The Lowest Number of Self Build Local Authority Housing

Although it did exceed its overall social housing delivery target by working with Approved Housing Builds and Private Developers.

Between 2022 and 2024, Kildare County Council  only delivered 34 Local Authority  "Own Build" houses out of a target of 1,179.

Although Kildare County Council did exceed its overall housing delivery targets between 2022 and 2024 it was largely achieved in the following ways:
Local Authority Turnkey: 211
Approved Housing Build: 68
Approved Housing Turnkey:  449
Part V:  562

Local Authority Turnkey, Approved Housing Build, Approved Housing Turnkey and Part V all involve third party suppliers, housing bodies or private builders and were not directly built by the council.

Between 2022 and 2024 Kildare's social housing output was 1,324, 12% more than the target of 1,179.

County Kildare also has the third largest number of derelict council houses at 129, in second place is Limerick with 220 houses and Cork topping the poll with 495 total derelict council houses across the county according to the Journal.ie

Today Housing Minister James Browne will seek approval today to publishing league tables of local authority housing delivery.

The data will focus on each local authority’s delivery of new-build social housing as set against the targets in the government’s Housing for All plan.

Housing Minister James Browne is expected to bring proposals to Cabinet today aimed at accelerating the delivery of social housing nationwide by cutting down on red tape.

As part of the plan, the Department of Housing will introduce standardised house types and design specifications, with the aim of streamlining the approval and construction process for local authorities and approved housing bodies.

According to the Journal.ie the current four-stage approval system for new social housing projects is set to be replaced with a single-step process, significantly reducing pre-construction delays.

These changes are expected to come into effect within the next three months.

In tandem with the housing reforms, Minister Browne will also seek government approval for the text of the Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill 2025.

The proposed legislation would allow planning permissions to be extended by up to three years in certain cases where developments are delayed due to judicial reviews.
