Three-quarters of students surveyed who had stayed in digs said they would recommend it to a friend.
The research, undertaken by Amárach as part of the Student Accommodation Strategy 2026-2035, revealed that more than 60% of homeowners would consider offering digs, with that willingness climbing to 82% amongst under 35s
As part of the ‘Rent-a-Room' scheme, eligible homeowners can earn up to €14,000 tax-free while students, or their parents, can avail of a rent tax credit of up to €2,000 per year, something only 45% of digs students were aware of.
Research showed that elements of a successful tenancy included meeting the student and their parents in advance and agreeing to ground rules, with 88% of digs homeowners currently doing so.
