Kildare One Of Five Counties Leading XL Bully Surrenders As Ban Takes Effect

More than a thousand certificates of exemption have been issued so far to the owners of XL Bully dogs.

A ban on the breed was announced last year.

Existing owners could apply to keep their pets if they had been neutered.

A total of 1,800 applications were received with 1,000 being granted and the others being worked through.

Nearly 50 XL Bullys were surrendered to city and county councils in advance of the ban - with the largest numbers seen in Dublin City, Limerick, Kildare, Cork City and Waterford.
