60 XL bully breed types were surrendered to local authorities across the country since February 1st 2025
Kildare has had four XL Bully type dogs surrendered to its local authority since the ban on XL bully types was introduced earlier this year.
Responding to a parliamentary question, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Fine Gael TD for Kildare South Martin Heydon revealed figures that show 60 XL Bully type dogs were surrendered to local authorities across the country between February 1st 2025 and the end of May this year.
Limerick saw the highest volume of surrenders, at 13.
Minister Heydon said owners of an XL Bully type dogs 'can surrender the dog to their local authority Dog Warden service where the dog will be euthanised in a humane manner'.
Figures for the number of dogs surrendered to animal welfare charities were not collected.
Recently, Kildare received €100,000 in funding to improve dog control in the county, and will be appointing a new dog warden, bringing the number of wardens in Kildare to three.
In another response to a parliamentary question, Minister Heydon noted that this funding 'recognises the increased demands in the area of dog control and the need to ensure resources on the ground to enforce the ban on XL Bully type dogs'.
