Ó Cearúil, who has repeatedly highlighted the dangers of artificial intelligence misuse, said the clip risks overshadowing what should be a reflective and unifying period ahead of Connolly’s inauguration on 11 November.
Kildare North TD Naoise Ó Cearúil has criticised former MEP Mick Wallace for circulating an AI-generated video depicting President-elect Catherine Connolly in a militarised scene, warning it distracts from national celebrations following her landslide victory.
Ó Cearúil, who has repeatedly highlighted the dangers of artificial intelligence misuse, said the clip risks overshadowing what should be a reflective and unifying period ahead of Connolly’s inauguration on November 11th.
He argued that the newly elected President would not welcome such content and questioned why Mr Wallace, no longer a public representative, would choose to provoke controversy.
The video, posted on social media, shows a manipulated image of Connolly wearing a tricolour balaclava and Palestinian-style scarf brandishing a weapon and shouting “Uachtarán.”

Mr Wallace shared the clip while accusing mainstream media of attempting to undermine Connolly during the campaign.
His comments have sparked a wave of online criticism, with many users branding the post “outrageous” and “disgusting.”
It now appears to have been deleted from his account.
