William Gallagher took a case under the Equal Status Act against Jenny Brennan and Matthew Hannigan, after they refused to sign up for the Housing Assistance Payment, or HAP.
A Kildare tenant has been awarded €23,000 after the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found his landlords discriminated against him for seeking State housing support.
William Gallagher took a case under the Equal Status Act against Jenny Brennan and Matthew Hannigan, after they refused to sign up for the Housing Assistance Payment, or HAP.
The WRC, according to the Irish Times, found their refusal and subsequent eviction notices - amounted to discrimination.
Adjudicator Valerie Murtagh said the breach was “at the more serious end of the scale,” noting Mr Gallagher was left out of pocket by €15,000 in rent the State would have covered.
He was awarded €15,000 for discrimination and a further €8,000 for penalisation, after receiving eviction notices within days of pursuing the matter legally.
The landlords denied any wrongdoing, claiming there had been an agreement not to apply for HAP because they intended to sell the property.
The WRC rejected that claim.
