The rescue marks the official start of the 2025 orphan season, a time when wildlife rehabilitation centres anticipate an influx of young and vulnerable animals in need of urgent care.
A tiny, day-old fox cub has become the first rescue of the season after being taken in by Kildare Wildlife Rescue.
It was discovered in Ballyfermot, Dublin.
The cub, weighing just 120 grams, was found alone on open green space before being brought to the Irish Blue Cross in Goldenbridge, where staff quickly sought expertise of staff in Kildare.
The male cub was transferred into the care of a licensed foster carer, Alexandra, who assessed and treated the vulnerable animal.
Upon examination, it was found that the cub had a laceration on its neck, requiring immediate antibiotics and pain relief.
The cause of the injury remains unknown.
The rescue marks the official start of the 2025 orphan season, a time when wildlife rehabilitation centres anticipate an influx of young and vulnerable animals in need of urgent care.
Wildlife experts said it's hugely important to contact professionals if an orphaned or injured wild animal is found, ensuring they receive the best chance of survival.
The cub will now continue to receive specialised care, with the goal of eventual rehabilitation and release back into the wild when he is strong enough to survive on his own.
