Lights Could Make Anti-Social Behaviour Worse: Council Says No To Security Lighting At Kilcock Playground

A motion from Social Democrats Councillor Peter Melrose had called for lighting to improve passive surveillance, but officials say previous attempts in other playgrounds failed to curb antisocial behaviour - and in some cases made it worse.

Kildare County Council has ruled out installing security lights at Kilcock Playground to tackle anti-social behaviour, saying they simply don’t work.

A motion from Social Democrats Councillor Peter Melrose had called for lighting to improve passive surveillance, but officials say previous attempts in other playgrounds failed to curb antisocial behaviour - and in some cases made it worse.

On that basis, the council says lighting at the Kilcock facility is “not feasible” and will not be installed.

"Security lights have not proved successful in the past in improving passive surveillance in playgrounds. It is our experience that antisocial behaviour continues or increases," a council spokesperson said.
