Schools could be closed in September if secretaries go on strike.
Speaking to Kfm, Esther Luttrell, secretary at St Colman's National School in Stradbally, said secretaries continue to be denied basic entitlements such as bereavement leave, critical illness leave, and access to a pension — regardless of their length of service.
She says secretaries are treated unfairly compared to others working in school environments.
She described the role as a "professional and unique" frontline position, with secretaries responsible for a wide range of duties, including managing budgets, wages, government data systems, and supporting both pupils and staff.
She said that while school secretaries fought and won the right to be included on the Department of Education payroll, they continue to be denied access to a number of schemes.
