The HSE has apologised and agreed to pay €20,000 in compensation to a teenager who was mistakenly administered a Covid-19 vaccination with a needle that had already been used on another person.
Ella Mockler Mulhern, from Lucan, was 13 at the time of the incident, which occurred at the Citywest vaccination centre in August 2021.
The Circuit Civil Court heard today that the nurse administering the vaccine initially denied the syringe had been previously used.
However, following an investigation by the centre's clinical lead, it was confirmed the needle had been used on one of three other people, though it was not possible to identify which individual.
An initial HSE settlement offer of €11,500 was rejected.
After further negotiations, the court approved a final offer of €20,000, plus expenses and legal costs.
The HSE's legal team read an apology in court, accepting responsibility for the incident.
Judge Fiona O'Sullivan approved the settlement, acknowledging the serious impact the ordeal had on the teenager.
