The charity provides school meals to children living in some of the world's poorest communities and now feeds more than three million children across 16 countries.
A volunteer with international charity Mary's Meals has begun a week-long fundraising walk which will bring participants through parts of Kildare.
Speaking on Kildare Today this morning, volunteer Orla Buckley said the annual Step-by-Step Walk to Feed the Next Child got underway in Dublin today, with walkers due to reach Maynooth later this evening.
The charity provides school meals to children living in some of the world's poorest communities, with Orla telling KFM that May's Meals now feeds more than three million children across 16 countries.
This year's walk will follow a largely canal-side route, with participants travelling through Lucan and Leixlip before reaching Maynooth.
The group will resume from Maynooth tomorrow morning and continue towards Longford over the coming days.
Orla, who is taking part in the walk for the eighth year, said volunteers and local communities play an important role along the route, providing refreshments and support for those taking part.
She first became involved with Mary's Meals after watching a documentary about the charity's work and has since visited projects supported by the organisation overseas.
Orla said €22 is enough for Mary's Meals to provide a child with school meals for an entire academic year.
The walk is now in its 14th year, with donations raised during the event going towards the charity's school feeding programmes.
