An average sized data centre in Ireland uses the same amount of electricity as Kilkenny town.
A Kildare based expert says up to 70 per cent of Ireland's electricity could be used on data centres by 2030.
The Joint Oireachtas Committee Environment and Climate Action, on which sits Kildare TD, Réada Cronin, has been warned if all planned centres go ahead the vast majority of the country's power would be eaten up by data centres.
A bill is due to come before the Dáil calling for a moratorium on permissions for new centres.
