Local residents are demanding accountability after a mature tree is understood to have been deliberately felled in The People's Park in Athy on Sunday night.
The tree, which had been part of the landscape for over 60 years, was brought down in a move described by a local Cllr as "mind-boggling".
Kfm understands that Kildare County Council officials have met with Gardai to determine who is behind the act of vandalism.
Labour Cllr Mark Leigh said the act has stirred anger among the community, especially after the park was cleaned and restored just five or six years ago, with a new play area installed.
"I'm not sure what the end goal was," Cllr Leigh said. "It's mind-boggling and a wanton act of sabotage."
