Some of the buildings already taken over by the council include the Old Band Hall on Cutlery Road in Newbridge, the former Bargain Store in Kildare Town, and the former Garda station on Leinster Street in Rathangan.
Almost €400,000 is owed on derelict buildings across the Kildare–Newbridge district alone.
Kildare County Council says 16 derelict properties are on its official register in the district, with €399,000 in charges still unpaid as of the end of 2025.
When a building is officially classed as derelict, the owner is charged a yearly levy.
The levy is 7% of the property’s market value, per year.
Of the 16 properties, five buildings are now in council ownership, with unpaid levies deducted from payouts.
Some of the buildings already taken over by the council include the Old Band Hall on Cutlery Road in Newbridge, the former Bargain Store in Kildare Town, and the former Garda station on Leinster Street in Rathangan.
One other building has been taken over by agreement and should come off the list later this year.
Compulsory acquisition of two further properties listed has also commenced.
The council says it collected more than €63,000 last year from owners of derelict properties.
Some of the money owed on the properties has been building up over several years.
Buildings are removed from the list once they are repaired.
Meanwhile, the Government plans to replace the current derelict sites levy with a new Derelict Property Tax.
Instead of councils collecting it, the tax will be handled by Revenue, like other taxes, with penalties if it isn’t paid.
Councils will still be responsible for identifying and listing derelict buildings.
