A new data centre for the government, located in Kildare, has been delivered on time and on budget.

Yesterday, Minister of State with special responsibility for Public Procurement, Digitalisation and eGovernment Emer Higgins, visited the site located at Backweston, Celbridge.

The construction for the data centre was completed in July 2025, having begun in 2023.

Planning permission for the data centre was granted in 2020.

The data centre was developed as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) under the European Union’s recovery plan, NextGenerationEU.

The plan is designed to provide financial aid to Member States to combat the economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and make the European economy more resistant to future shocks.

To benefit from this financial aid, EU Governments have submitted national recovery and resilience plans, outlining the reforms and investments they will implement by end-2026, outlining clear milestones and targets.

Ireland's Recovery and Resilience Facility allocation is €1.15 billion, including REPowerEU.

The government submitted its third payment request, with a value of €240 million, earlier this week.

The European Commission states Backweston Campus is developed in a more environmentally friendly manner, including the possibility of reusing the data centre’s waste heat for other buildings on the campus.

It is also said that the data processing shall result in demonstrated substantial life-cycle greenhouse emission savings.

Speaking on the Backweston data centre, Minister Higgins said:

"The Backweston shared Government Data Centre is a fantastic example of how NextGenerationEU funding is delivering real, tangible results. This complex build was completed on time and on budget, which is a testament to the skill and dedication of everyone involved.

“It will harness the latest and most efficient technologies to ensure that vital Government data is stored in a secure and energy-efficient way, meeting the Government’s technology and energy-saving requirements both now and into the future. This state-of-the-art facility will give State bodies the ICT infrastructure they need to work more efficiently, streamline processes, reduce duplication and bring greater consistency to how public services are delivered."

It is said that it will be operation from 2026 onwards.

Kfm recently reported that data centres in Ireland account for almost 20% of Ireland's electricity consumption.
