Newbridge-native Dr Joseph Byrne is one of 22 projects that has been funded by Research Ireland Frontiers for ambitious scientific research.
Dr Byrne is a lecturer in Bioinorganic Chemistry at UCD and Fellow of the interdisciplinary Conway Institute.
His project entitled "GlycoMetalGuard" is about developing antimicrobial coatings and therapies to prevent hospital-acquired infections that come from medical devices.
His team aims to target harmful bacteria with novel sugar-based metal compounds.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Dr Byrne spoke about his hopes for the project.
"The hope is that people who use these devices - if we can make them over the coming our years - will be in a better position in the long run, and it will save the health service money, it costs about €30,000 for every person who gets an infection in hospital."
