Newbridge-native Dr Joseph Byrne is one of 22 projects that has been funded by Research Ireland Frontiers for ambitious scientific research.

Fianna Fáil Minister for Further and High Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Kildare North TD James Lawless has announced funding of €20 million for the projects.

Dr Byrne is a lecturer in Bioinorganic Chemistry at UCD and Fellow of the interdisciplinary Conway Institute.

His project entitled "GlycoMetalGuard" is about developing antimicrobial coatings and therapies to prevent hospital-acquired infections that come from medical devices.

His team aims to target harmful bacteria with novel sugar-based metal compounds.

Speaking on Kildare Today, Dr Byrne spoke about his hopes for the project.

"The hope is that people who use these devices - if we can make them over the coming our years - will be in a better position in the long run, and it will save the health service money, it costs about €30,000 for every person who gets an infection in hospital."
