No Response From Dog Owner In Animal Welfare Case - TD Who Knows Family Not In Position To Comment

The TD said they would look into the matter but were not in a position to comment when contacted by Kfm.

Repeated attempts by Kfm to contact the owner of an "emaciated" dog recently returned to Laois under warrant have gone unanswered.

Kfm sought clarity on the current condition of the dog but no response was provided.

Kfm has also contacted a TD who knows the family.

The TD said they would look into the matter but were not in a position to comment when contacted by Kfm.

They confirmed, however, that they only became aware of the case when locals sent them emails detailing their concerns.

The dog, described in a veterinary report as “emaciated” and “dehydrated,” was initially removed from a property in Laois and brought for emergency treatment by the Kildare Animal Foundation.

Gardaí later secured a court warrant for the animal’s return. No charges have been brought.

Animal welfare group My Lovely Horse Rescue has today raised concerns around the circumstances surrounding the dog's return.

In a statement, it said the emergency vet in Kildare did not deem the dog -  which has diabetes - fit to return to its previous environment and questioned whether proper documentation of care was reviewed.

"We can confirm that the emergency vet did not attest that the dog was in good condition or fit to return to her previous environment," a spokesperon for the group said.

They also noted that the vet reportedly consulted by Gardaí had a long-standing relationship with the dog and her owner.

They said this "presents a clear conflict of interest unless full, verifiable documentation of ongoing care was provided".

They have requested proof of a veterinary visit history with dates; relevant prescriptions and insulin dosage logs; a dietary and feeding plan consistent with diabetic care; and evidence that these were "actively followed".

"If the safeguards have not been fulfilled, then in our opinion, the dog should be removed again, pending a full and transparent resolution," the spokesperson said.

A senior Garda source told Kfm that officers often lack training and resources in handling animal welfare cases.

The dog’s current condition remains unknown.
