The CCCP is asking the Government to introduce ride-hailing services, where private car owners can act as taxi drivers, subject to regulations.
There aren't enough taxis in the country - with two thirds of people living in rural areas claiming they couldn't get one in December last year.
New research from the Competitions and Consumer Protection Commission reveals one in four people experienced problems while trying to hail a cab, and gave up.
The CCCP is asking the Government to introduce ride-hailing services, where private car owners can act as taxi drivers, subject to regulations.
In response, Danny O’Gorman, General Manager at Freenow, said: "Full deregulation is a race to the bottom that would inevitably lead to a decline in service quality. We believe the key to improving the taxi industry is through targeted measures, such as reform to the Local Area Hackney Scheme."
But CCCP Chair, Brian McHugh, says the taxi market needs to be opened up.
