Onsite Talks Underway Between OPW And Save Castletown Gate Protectors Group

Onsite Talks Underway Between OPW and Save Castletown Gate Group

The OPW site manager is currently speaking to some representatives of the Save Castletown Gate Protectors outside Castletown house.

Last week, the OPW said essential contractors and suppliers will access Castletown estate daily via Lime Avenue from today.

It was expected that four to five essential service vehicles will access the site daily.

A speed limited buggy going no more than 10kms is currently on site.

Niall McCarthy of the Save Castletown Gate Protectors said the M4 access is the "only solution".

He said an interim solution would be a person walking service vehicles up Lime Avenue.

But, according to the OPW, this was costing €10,000 per week and is no longer an option.

A spokesperson for the OPW said: "In order to open Castletown House and to open the estate from dawn to dusk, access for these vehicles and services is required. The OPW has planned controlled, speed-limited access for essential service vehicles. This will ensure that the whole of the Castletown Estate is safe for visitors."

They added: "The proposed alternative of walking contractors for access is not feasible or practical. Access to Lime Avenue will be fully controlled by the OPW to make sure that our visitors are safe to enjoy their heritage and to provide value for money."
