Capacity may need to be expanded in other South West hospitals if University Hospital Limerick cannot keep up with demand, according to a Clare TD.
The unit is experiencing overcrowding levels that have drawn serious concern from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
Union representatives said today that the hospital is 'chaotic' and the situation has gone out of control.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has expressed serious concern at the current figures.
On Wednesday there were 111 people on trolleys in the hospital.
Hospital Management have admitted there are 'record' levels of presentations to the Emergency Unit lately.
Management at the facility have appealed to people with less serious illnesses or issues to present to an injury clinic or GP instead of the emergency unit.
