Caps apply in Rent Pressure Zones, which includes all of county Kildare.

People Before Profit says the Government's 2 per cent cap on rent hikes in Rent Pressure Zones is 'worse than useless'.

The entirety of Co. Kildare is an RPZ, and 12,000 people here live in privately rented accommodation.

The party says only real rent controls with a rent authority empowered to reduce, set and cap rents can tackle the housing crisis.

The party's TD Richard Boyd Barrett says rents are already at totally unaffordable levels.

He says the rent cap won't apply to new tenancies
