News emerged recently that asylum seekers may be accommodated at the unused 'Waterways Hotel'
People took to the streets in Sallins this evening to protest against the potential arrival of international protection applicants to the village.
Fianna Fail TD James Lawless confirmed this news in his monthly newsletter, as he received confirmation from Minister Roderic O'Gorman that the site was being looked at.
Waterways Hotel was offered to the Department through its Request for Tender (RFT) for "Bespoke Panel Agreement for the Provision of Accommodation Services and Related Services for Persons Seeking International Protection" which was published in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Since then, locals have set up groups on Facebook and other social media platforms, demanding answers and information from the Government.
Between 80 and 100 people attended this evening's protest, with some carrying signs saying "Sallins Says No To Unvetted Men" and “Stop. We do not consent. This is a planned invasion on the community of Sallins. On the land of Éire. This is not acceptable."
The property will be providing 56 double and twin rooms.
As it stands, it is expected that the property will be available for occupation, following carrying out of mobilisation works, by year end.
James Lawless has told Kfm that he has expressed the concerns of residents to both the Minister and the owners of the property and will continue to follow up with them.
Deputy Lawless provided an update on his Facebook page today, which can be read in full here.
This evening's protest went off peacefully and Kfm understands that another protest is planned for this coming Saturday.
