Rescue Group Fears Chilling Effect On Animal Welfare Efforts After Emaciated Dog Returned To Owner

A spokesperson for the group said they often deal with challenging conditions trying to rescue animals believed to be neglected or mistreated. They said their only concern is that animals get the correct treatment.

There are fears that animal welfare groups across Ireland could face a chilling legal precedent, after a severely underweight dog was returned to its owner in Laois.

The dog, described in a vet’s report as “emaciated and malnourished,” had been rescued and treated by the Kildare Animal Foundation.

However, Gardaí secured a court warrant for its return, and no charges have been brought against the owner.

The Foundation now warns that if action is taken against them for initially refusing to hand back the animal, it could have a chilling impact on welfare organisations when intervening in suspected cruelty cases.

A spokesperson for the group said they often deal with challenging conditions trying to rescue animals believed to be neglected or mistreated.

They said their only concern is that animals get the correct treatment.

A senior Garda source has told Kfm that officers are ill-equipped - both in training and experience - to deal with animal cruelty, which is often treated as a low priority within the force.
