As of September 30th, 19,837 learner permit holders were in Kildare alone, up from 19,583 at the end of March - an increase of 254 over the six month period.

The number of learner drivers jumped by more 12 thousand in the space of six months, according to data the association received through a Freedom of Information request.

That's despite the Road Safety Authority announcing in September that it had successfully reduced the average wait time for a driving test to 10 weeks.
Ger Hyland, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, says the numbers don't add up.
