Road Safety Minister Says Drivers Who Haven’t Seen Gardaí Are “Unlucky” As Roads Policing Numbers Fall

In the Kildare/Carlow division, only four were allocated - two to Naas and two to Carlow.

The Road Safety Minister has said drivers who haven’t encountered Gardai on patrol are simply “unlucky”.

The comments come as new figures show just 56 Garda members were assigned to Roads Policing Units last year - less than half of the 127 identified as needed to meet targets.

In the Kildare/Carlow division, only four were allocated - two to Naas and two to Carlow.

Nationally, roads policing numbers have fallen sharply over the past decade.

The Traffic Corps had around 1,200 members in 2009.

That figure now stands at 645.

Junior Transport Minister Sean Canney insists Gardaí are on the roads - even if motorists don’t see them.
