Sale Of Electric Vehicles Reach Record High In July

Kildare saw a 69.4 per cent change in new electric car registrations in July 2026 compared to the same period in 2025

There has been an increase in the number of new electric cars being registered in Ireland.

In its official 262 new vehicle registration statistics for July, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) reported that 9,682 new electric cars were registered; a 98 per cent increase from the 4,898 registrations in July 2025.

Kildare saw a 69.4 per cent change in new electric car registrations in July 2026 compared to the same period in 2025 (1,923 in 2026 compared to 1,135 in 2025).

The 2026 share in new electric car registrations in Kildare is 6.44 per cent, compared to the 2025 share of 6.13 per cent.

Nationally, new car registrations for July were up 8.63 per cent (29,046) compared to July 2025 (26,738).

Registrations year to date are up 5.2 per cent (114,228) on the same period last year (108,487).

In Kildare, new car registrations were 5,508, compared to the 4,942 recorded in the same period last year.

In the new car market share by engine type, Battery Electric cars achieved the lead market position for the first time this year with 26.12 per cent, followed by Hybrid (Petrol Electric) 24.59 per cent, Petrol 20.39 per cent, Plug-In Hybrid 14.45 per cent, and Diesel 12.45 per cent.

Imported Used Cars have seen a 27 per cent (8,616) increase in July 2026, when compared to July 2025 (6,803).

Year to date imports are up 37 per cent (55,724) on 2025 (40,698).

Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) decreased by 6 per cent (5,744) compared to July last year (6,116).

Year to date, LCVs are up 9.3 per cent (27,237), whilst Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations experienced an increase of 14.2 per cent (433) in comparison to July 2025 (379).

Year to date, HGVs are down 2.2 per cent (1,984).
