Searches along the River Barrow in Athy have ended, following reports that a person entered the water shortly after 11am on Sunday morning.
In a statement to Kfm News, gardaí confirmed that following an operation involving the local fire service, Civil Defense and An Garda Síochána, the body of a male in his 80s was recovered on Wednesday evening.
His body has been transferred to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
The coroner has been notified.
It is understood that no foul play is suspected at this time.
