"We're Doing It The Diplomatic Way": Castledermot Farmer Calls For Dáil Recall As Fuel Cuts Set To Be Phased Out

The subsidies were introduced in April.

The Government has come under increasing pressure to recall the Dáil early as the fuel support scheme is set to be phased out.

There are calls for the cuts to be extended into the winter, as petrol and diesel prices continue to rise.

The subsidies were introduced in April.

Enterprise Minister Peter Burke has said that an early Dáil recall was "under review" at the moment.

Speaking on Kildare Today, John Dallon, Castledermot farmer and owner of Kildare Agri Care Ltd. said he's calling for the cuts to stay in place, ensuring that he hasn't called for protests:

"We're doing it the diplomatic way, we haven't called any protests as of yet, were allowing the Government to reflect on what we've said and what we've asked him to do, I would hope that the Taoiseach would sit down and rethink this and not rise the price of fuel."

"He will be the driving force of the people of the island of Ireland going back onto the streets [to protest], because the people of Ireland are very frustrated dealing with so much in terms of the inflation with the rising prices of food, as well as kids going back to school."

Dallon added that "it's entirely up to them, we will not be back on the streets if they don't put the prices up".

He said that he has spoke to a number of representatives who share the same view as him, with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald having penned a letter to Taoiseach calling for the Dáil to be recalled.

Justice Minister Jim O' Callaghan has said that it's not possible for the people to be insulated from every geopolitical shock that comes.

Mr Dallon also criticised the fact that many rebates for farmers, hauliers and contractors were yet to be paid.

"There's an awful lot of road hauliers that haven't received their rebates, and a number of farmers and contractors who haven't received them as well."
