It has been revealed that 1 in 4 women have been affected by maternal mental health difficulties.
It comes as World Maternal Mental Health Day took place on 6th of May.
It hopes to raise awareness of mental health during pregnancy and in the first year after birth.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Michelle Daly Hayes spoke about her experience with mental health as a new mother:
"It's something that affects you quite strongly, but it's so important for others to see as well."
"I often describe having post-natal depression as being underwater, you can see the world around you but it's really difficult to see the world going by with yourself in it anymore, that's why its so important for others to reach a hand out and help you out."
The show also featured Principal Specialist Clinical Psychologist in Perinatal Mental Health in the Coombe Hospital, Dr Sabrina Coyle, who believs that there is a still a stigma surrounding maternal mental health:
"We're definitely seeing increased number of referrals, but there is still a stigma. The earlier we can intervene the better the outcome is for mums and babies, to get them off to a good start with their babies."
