One in five directors of nursing at residential care homes

One in five directors of nursing at residential care homes are actively planning to leave their jobs following the stress of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, a new study reveals.

The research, published by Trinity College Dublin, found that a further 28 per cent of directors of nursing at care homes are considering leaving their posts.

Nursing homes and other residential care settings have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic given the effect of the coronavirus disease on older people in congregated settings.

Chief Executive, Nursing Homes Ireland, Tadhg Daly commented: "Many of the directors were under extreme pressure in work during the pandemic.

"Then also worrying about their own families when going into healthcare settings with covid.

"We heard of one nursing home with four hearses lined up outside.

"Recruitment is an issue because the people aren't available.

"Retention is an issue because of the pressure of the job the pay," he explained.

Tadhg Daly spoke with Ciara Noble on Thursday's Kildare Focus:
