TikTok Agrees To Appear Before Oirechtas Media Committee

TikTok has agreed to appear before the Oireachtas Media Committee later this month.

The calls for them to appear came after five teenagers lost their lives on the M9 in Moone whilst driving the wrong way, leaving four others seriously injured.

The company had proposed meeting members privately to discuss concerns around illegal and dangerous driving content.

However, the online platform now says discussions with Coimisiún na Meán and Gardai have progressed sufficiently to allow them appear publicly before the committee.

Chair of the Committee, Labour's Alan Kelly's welcomed the move and says he looks forward to full engagement.

It comes amid EU level discussions for social media bans for under 13s.

New research from Coimisiún na Meán found 69 per cent of children favour being taught how to stay safe online instead.

67 per cent also believe children would find a way around a social media ban.

However, a third of young people surveyed said they'd been upset by something they experienced online in the past year, that rises to almost half of 16 and 17-year-olds.

The Government will know by next week if it will be acting alone on age restrictions for social media platforms, or working in tandem with the European Union.

That’s according to the Media Minister Patrick O' Donovan, who says there are growing calls for EU action, more than six months after Cabinet agreed to start work on the issue.
