The bill will now be examined by an Oireachtas committee before progressing to the next stage.

A proposal to abolish the three-day waiting period for abortion services has cleared it's first major hurdle in the Dáil.

TDs backed the Sinn Féin bill by 86 votes to 70 following a conscience vote for Government members.

Fianna Fáil TDs were split over the measure, while Fine Gael deputies also voted on both sides.

The bill will now be examined by an Oireachtas committee before progressing to the next stage.

The legislation could become law before the end of the year.
