Expert Group Issues Targets For Halving Of Emissions Within A Decade.

The Climate Change Advisory Council is targeting cuts of 4.8% a year up to 2025, followed by 8.4% annually out to 2030.

An expert government committee has released a programme to cut Ireland's greenhouse emissions in half inside a decade.

The government plans to make the two five-year carbon budgets legally binding within the next four months.

The Climate Change Advisory Council is targeting cuts of 4.8% a year up to 2025, followed by 8.4% annually out to 2030.

Climate Action Minister Eamon Ryan says sector-by-sector targets will be published in the weeks ahead, and each "will need to play its part".

When ratified by the Oireachtas, the targets are to be made legally binding.

Chair of the expert panel, Marie Donnelly, says the smaller cuts in the first budget aren't a sign action is being delayed.

The IFA says the report will have profound implications and will threaten the viability of farmers throughout the country.
