Lisa Smith has been cleared of funding terrorism but found guilty of being a member of ISIS between October 2015 and December 2019.
The 40-year-old former Irish soldier was allowed to remain on bail ahead of her sentence hearing.
“Inquisitive, single-minded and determined,” – that’s how the judges described Lisa Smith in the lead up to her decision to travel to ISIS controlled territory in Syria in October 2015.
They were referring to her online contact with an ISIS fighter and other members of the terrorist organisation.
It was the prosecution’s case that she had been radicalised through Facebook chats with that ISIS fighter.
She claimed her reason for going there was a simple and innocent answering of a religious call, but the judges pointed out early in their judgement that issues of religious beliefs are irrelevant where there’s evidence of criminality.
Smith was acquitted of a separate charge of financing terrorism and her sentence hearing for the membership conviction will take place in July.
