The findings in the research paper published by Alcohol Action Ireland and University College Cork found that existing data from 2017 under-reports the likely death rate by over 40%.
4 people every day are dying from Alcohol Abuse.
Women account for two thirds of alcohol related deaths in Ireland.
The findings from UCC and Alcohol Action Ireland show alcohol abuse accounted for 5 percent of total deaths here in 2019 or 30 deaths per week.
De. Sheila Gilheaney told KFM about the habits that were formed by some over the pandemic: "Such a big increase in home drinking.
"Those that were already drinking heavily started drinking a bit more.
"The concern would be that patterns were being established.
"20% of ICU beds were used by those of us with alcohol problems," she said.
