A former garda has been jailed for six years for sexually assaulting a woman three times after locking her in Aughrim Garda Station in Co Wicklow, where he was based at the time.
William Ryan, a 41-year-old married father-of-four, claimed what happened in the station in September 2020 was “fully consensual,” but the jury didn’t believe him.
The woman had gone to the garda station to see Ryan for advice about how to get her car back after it was seized while her son was driving it.
Ryan helped with the process of retrieving the car but then said she would have to "repay the favour".
He then sexually assaulted the woman.
At his sentencing today, the woman told the court she felt such shame afterwards even though she had done no wrong; but is now taking back her power.
Ryan has since retired from the force.
