A new report says figures don't represent the reality of the issue
The Government is failing to identify victims of child trafficking, according to the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
Its new report says current figures do not represent the reality and scope of the problem.
While the IHREC says it's a larger problem in Ireland than people think, also adding that there is too much focus on trafficking through the migration system.
It's warning the number of children formally identified as victims remains extremely low , despite growing evidence of exploitation.
The body is also concerned over a delay in establishing a National Referral Mechanism which is provided for in a law passed in 2024.
It's calling for state agencies and NGOs to be responsible for identifying victims of trafficking, alongside Gardaí.
