The criminal organisation are suspected of hundreds of burglaries and car thefts in the Leinster area.
Gardaí have officially classified the prolific ‘Lucky Dip’ gang as a criminal organisation and a crackdown on their activities is now in place.
According to the Irish Independent, over 60 criminals have been linked to the crime group who are suspected of carrying out hundreds of burglaries and car thefts in the Leinster area.
The gang had recently carried out thefts in Kildare, including the robbery of a red Volkswagen Polo and a separate robbery that occurred at Buggy's shop in Ardclough in January.
It had been uncovered that the gang primarily have been travelling on the M11, M3, M4 and M7 motorways but have also engaged in dangerous driving on rural roads, in particular around the Wicklow Mountains.
One of the most prolific offenders in the 'Lucky Dip' gang is aged just 15 but has been linked to dozens of theft incidents and is currently on bail after being charged after a high-profile Garda operation in south Dublin.
It has also emerged that despite a number of recent Garda successes, several juvenile gang members were on bail because the country’s only youth detention centre is full.
If prosecuted under the organised crime offences that they are being investigated for, the gang members could face potential jail sentences of at least four years.
